THE FAIR SCHOOL FUNDING PLAN
Meet the State Legislators and Education Leaders driving
the equitable, comprehensive, transparent funding model that will change the face of public education for 600+ School Districts and 1.7 million students across Ohio.
Join us for one of the most important education events of 2021. John Patterson, former State Representative (D-Jefferson), will moderate a comprehensive explanation of the Fair School Funding Plan, and how it will transform Ohio's inequitable and inadequate education funding system into a fair, consistent, and sustainable method that will truly serve ALL of Ohio's children. Ohio House Bill 1 sponsors, State Representatives Jamie Callender (R-Concord) and Bride Sweeney (D-Cleveland), will explain why HB1 is a critical priority bill in the Statehouse; Akron Public Schools Treasurer, Ryan Pendleton, will expertly breakdown the core components of the funding model that make the system equitable; and Ohio school superintendents and treasurers will share why the Fair School Funding Plan is critical for their students and districts.
BACKGROUND
In 1997, the Ohio Supreme Court ruled, in the DeRolph v. State of Ohio case, that Ohio's education funding system was unconstitutional. Since then the Ohio legislature has failed to provide a suitable remedy that ensures that every child receives a quality education, regardless of their school district's ability to fund education. Ohio is still plagued with insufficient funding and an over reliance on property taxes.
In 2017, State Representative Robert Cupp (R-Lima) and then-State Representative John Patterson (D-Jefferson) convened a team of school treasurers, superintendents, and front-line educators to develop a NEW school funding system to address Ohio's glaring issues. The unprecedented Fair School Funding Plan (FSFP) was born out of extensive planning, meticulous research, economic modeling, and practitioner feedback. The Plan determines a true base cost to educate each student in their district, establishes an equitable cost-share for the state and district based on the district's ability to contribute, increases categorical aid and help with transportation costs, and directly funds vouchers and charter schools instead of charging local districts.
