Join us for an in-depth discussion about the 2021 ONCE-IN-A-DECADE redistricting process and how it will impact Northeast Ohio's gerrymandered voting districts. Learn about the redistricting process, what's ahead, and how YOU can help draw new district maps for Northeast Ohio.
BACKGROUND
2021 is the year that US Congressional and Ohio House and Senate districts will be redrawn… a once-in-a-decade opportunity! Every 10 years, the nation and individual states redraw their congressional and state legislative district maps using newly released 10-year US Census data. Many voters in Ohio are excited about this prospect as Ohio has some of the worst gerrymandered districts in the country. One district, the 9th Congressional, stretches 96 miles from Toledo to Cleveland and, at one point, is connected by only a bridge across the water.
After the release of 2011's set of gerrymandered district maps, Ohioans said NO MORE! In 2015 and 2018, more than 70% of Ohio voters, in all 88 counties, overwhelmingly voted for significant mapmaking reforms that change how Congressional and Ohio Legislative maps are drawn. These reforms improve transparency, mandate public input, ensure both political parties are represented, and have outlined restrictions on breaking up communities into multiple districts.
The Census Bureau is slated to release 2020 redistricting data in mid-August. Upon release, the information will be configured into usable mapmaking data and redistricting will begin!
